NATION IN BRIEF : ILLINOIS : Judge Is Overruled on Jet Engine Test
- Share via
A federal judge in Chicago blocked a state judge’s order that engine parts from a United jet crash in Sioux City, Iowa, be analyzed at an independent laboratory. U.S. District Judge William Hart halted all tests on parts and scheduled a hearing for Oct. 30 on whether the pieces should be analyzed by the engine manufacturer or an independent lab, as a Cook County judge had ordered. Plaintiffs suing the manufacturer, General Electric Co., had protested a National Transportation Safety Board practice that calls for tests to be done by the manufacturer. The plane, United Flight 232, crashed July 19, killing 112 of 286 people.
