Southwest Routs Glendale, 26-10

A focused Southwest College football team defeated Glendale College, 26-10, in a Western State Conference confrontation of title contenders Saturday afternoon at Southwest.

Southwest Coach Henry Washington, who felt his team played lethargically in last week’s 28-7 victory over Pierce College, appeared pleased with the Cougars’ performance Saturday.

“Our kids rise to the occasion and to the opponent,” Washington said. “Pierce caught us looking ahead. We were determined to win this one and knew it would be tough. Glendale has a great tradition.”

Washington said he can now turn his attention toward Saturday’s game against league-leading Ventura College.

“This was a great win for us, but we have a long way to go in conference,” he said. “We’re in a very tough division. We’ll have our hands full the rest of the schedule.”

Of four remaining opponents, only Harbor College (Nov. 11) entered the weekend with more than one loss.

But now, according to Washington, the Cougars (4-0-1 in conference, 5-0-1 overall) have a clearer view of what it will take to own first place in the WSC. Specifically, the Cougar offensive attack appeared to be better balanced than it was a week ago, led by the ground game of running back William Jarrett. Jarrett, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound freshman, carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that staked his team to a 20-10 halftime lead.
