ROME — Italy pledged full cooperation with the United States today in an inquiry over whether computer giant Olivetti violated Western restrictions on high technology exports to the Soviet Union.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Rome shares U.S. aims to “continue to maintain appropriate controls on the export of strategically relevant material.”
The statement followed talks on the Olivetti affair between Italian Foreign Minister Gianni De Michelis and U.S. Undersecretary of State Reginald Bartholomew. It said the two sides “exchanged information” on exports by the Italian firm to the Soviet Union and Rome pledged to continue its probe in a spirit of cooperation.
