Cost of Bouncing Checks Going Up: The average fee that banks charge for bouncing a check has increased in the past two years, and it varies widely from city to city, according to a survey by Bank Rate Monitor, an industry newsletter. The newsletter said the average fee for writing a check on insufficient funds in a checking account was $16.13 on Oct. 25, up from $15.30 in April 1987. The highest fees were in Philadelphia, where some banks charge as much as $30, while the lowest were reported in New York, where some charge customers less than $10.
