GENEVA — Officially reported cases of the fatal disease AIDS rose by 4,340 in October to a global total of 186,803, with the United States accounting for most of the increase, the World Health Organization said Friday.
The United States reported 3,098 new cases, raising its overall reported total to 107,308.
The WHO says its monthly totals of newly reported cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome often fluctuate because some of the 152 countries report more regularly than others. The organization estimates the true global total to be over 500,000.
