Canyon Finally Gets a League Victory

ORANGE — Canyon High School won its first Century League football game of the season,32-6 over El Modena in front of 3,000 at El Modena Friday.
The victory was only the second for Canyon over El Modena since the series started in 1978; the first was in 1986.
Canyon is 3-6 overall and 1-3 in league play. El Modena falls to 2-6-1 and 1-3.
Canyon scored its first touchdown with nine minutes 36 seconds left in the first half. on running back Fred Velez’s two-yard run, which capped a 75-yard drive. Chris Snitko added the PAT.
Four minutes later, Canyon quarterback Chuck Nickerson ran 19 yards for a touchdown. Snitko’s kick was blocked to make the score 13-0 at the half.
Canyon scored three second half touchdowns, a 15-yard run by Jeff Brunswig, a nine-yard run by Velez (151 yards on 24 carries) and Lee Torres’ 55-yard interception return.
