Late Scores Carry Santiago Past Bolsa Grande

GARDEN GROVE — Jason Hooper’s 25-yard field goal and Clyde Perezcastaneda’s 60-yard interception return for a touchdown, both in the final 3 1/2 minutes, led Santiago High School to a 26-19 upset of Bolsa Grande Friday night in Garden Grove League play.
With 3:44 left in the game, Joe Polman recovered a fumble by Bolsa Grande quarterback Sonny Nguyen at Santiago’s 35-yard line. Five plays later, Perezcastaneda caught a a 42-yard pass from Chad Carter to move the ball to the six. Rick Tantardini sacked Carter for a five-yard loss on third down to set up Hooper’s field goal, his second of the game.
Bolsa returned the ensuing kickoff to its 25, but lost the ball on the next play when Perezcastaneda intercepted Nguyen’s pass and ran down the middle for the score.
“Solid defense and hard work pulled us through,” Santiago defensive tackle Chad Robbins said.
Bolsa is 3-3 in league, 4-5 overall. Santiago is 2-4 in league, 3-6 overall.
