Channel Islands High, the Marmonte League champion the past two years, will be missing from the playoffs for only the fourth time since 1975. Camarillo put together two long scoring drives and upset the Raiders, 13-6, in a Marmonte League game Saturday night at Hueneme High.
With the score tied, 6-6, in the fourth quarter, Camarillo marched 83 yards in 11 plays and scored on a seven-yard run up the middle by fullback Tag Johnson with five minutes to play.
Camarillo (3-5, 2-3 in league play) scored on its first offensive series, driving 79 yards in only five running plays. Fullback Greg Exler carried four times for 41 yards before Brian Vellmure took a pitch 38 yards for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
Channel Islands (4-4, 2-3) scored on a 15-yard pass from Mark Contreras to Chris Venturina with 1:27 to play in the first half. Contreras, a senior, passed for 202 yards.
The Channel Islands loss handed Westlake (3-5-1, 3-2-1) a playoff berth for the first time since 1982, when the Warriors won the league title. Westlake has completed its league schedule.
