SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Padres’ Spring Opener Will Feature Angels

The Padres will open the 1990 exhibition season on March 2 against the California Angels at Yuma. The team will close its spring training schedule against the Seattle Mariners on April 1 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
Pitchers and catchers will open training camp on February 17, with the first workout scheduled for the 18th. The rest of the team will report on February 20, with the first full-squad workout set for the 21st.
The Padres will play four games against the Angels to open spring training. The team will play a three-game series against the Angels in Palm Springs, March 26-28 and then play the Mariners March 30 in Las Vegas and March 31 and April 1 in San Diego.

AWARDS
Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s cross-country team placed four of the seven runners on the Golden State Athletic Conference first team. Goshu Tadese, Gus Arce, Rick Penman and Sean O’Hara were selected for the men’s team, Anette Ronnerman for the women.
Steve Cokkinis was chosen a first-team midfielder in men’s soccer.
GOLF
San Diego State finished fourth, U.S. International fifth and the University of San Diego 11th in the 12-team Embassy Suites Gaucho tournament in Santa Barbara.
SDSU’s Doug Karney finished third at 227, three strokes behind titlist John Damon of Oregon State. USIU’s John Adams finished seventh, five strokes off the lead. SDSU’s Tim Todd finished eighth.
