2,900 Pesticide Suicides Reported in Rural China

BEIJING — More than 2,900 peasants in a single region of China have committed suicide since 1985 by drinking pesticide, an official newspaper said Thursday in a rare report into the pressures in rural society.
The Farmers Daily said the suicide toll is rising and shows both the moral degradation of village life and the clash between traditional ideas among the older generation and their children’s desire for freedom and personal choice.
