HEALTH : FDA Commissioner to Quit Post

WASHINGTON — Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Frank Young is leaving the FDA to take another position within the Public Health Service, sources said today.
Young’s new post will be deputy assistant secretary for health handling science and environmental matters, the sources said.
Young--criticized by some members of Congress for his handling of a scandal involving generic drugs--headed the transition team for Louis W. Sullivan when Sullivan became secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, which includes the Public Health Service. The FDA is part of the Public Health Service.
Young has been FDA commissioner since July, 1984. The agency, one of the principal consumer protection agencies within the federal government, is responsible for assuring the safety of drugs, cosmetics and most food products.
