Tim Gallegos scored the winning penalty kick as the UCLA men’s soccer team defeated San Diego State, 2-1, in overtime the first round of the NCAA West Regional playoffs at El Camino College.
The teams were unable to score in two 15-minute overtime periods, forcing the penalty-kicks round. The game was tied, 1-1, after regulation play.
UCLA’s Mike Laper scored on an assist by Steve Black at 26:00 in the first half, but San Diego’s Brian Craft-Negrete scored from 35 yards at 43:31.
The Bruins will next play Portland, a 1-0 overtime winner over Washington.
