ON THE SIDELINES : Witsken Upset at S. Africa Open

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Seventh-seeded Todd Witsken of the United States lost both tiebreakers and was upset by South Africa’s Neil Broad 7-6, 7-6 today in the first round of the South African Open.

Broad won the first tiebreaker 7-3 and took the second 7-5.

Third-seeded Christo van Rensburg of South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Italy’s Francesco Cancellotti.

Van Rensburg, his country’s top-ranked player, needed only 49 minutes to dispose of the unseeded Italian.

Also winning second-round matches were three unseeded Americans. David Pate ousted fellow American Richey Reneberg, 6-4, 6-2; Joey Rive beat South African Royce Deppe, 7-6, 7-6, and Paul Chamberlain beat Kelly Jones, another American, 6-3, 6-3.

Twenty-two foreign players entered the tournament despite a warning by the International Olympic Committee that participants will be barred from the 1992 Games.
