Region : Serbians, Jews to Meet

Representatives of a Serbian-Jewish Friendship Society will be meeting with Holocaust survivor groups Sunday in a first-of-its-kind effort to establish ties between the Yugoslav republic and the Jewish community of Los Angeles.
Anna Fisher, a member of the Council of Post-War Jewish Organizations, said the meeting came at the initiative of the Serbian group, which also has branches in Belgrade, Israel and other cities in the United States.
The meeting, to be held at 1 p.m. in the board room of the Jewish Federation Council building at 6505 Wilshire Blvd., will feature talks by two members of the Serbian Society of Science and Arts, she said.
Serbia is one of six republics and two autonomous regions that make up Yugoslavia, a nominally communist country in southern Europe that is not a member of the Warsaw Pact.
Serbs and Jews were killed in large numbers in areas of Yugoslavia that were under the control of German forces and their local allies during World War II.
