Two women remained in critical condition Monday at the UC San Diego Medical Center burn unit after firefighters pulled them from their burning Kearny Mesa condominium Sunday night, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters, responding to the call about 7:17 p.m., found Lila Sathre and Geraldine Spatheis, both 60, lying unconscious on the floor of their home in the 3200 block of Ashford Street, spokesman John MacDonald said.
The blaze was contained by 7:30 p.m.; damage to the condominium was estimated at $12,000, MacDonald said. Metropolitan Arson Strike Team investigators said a smoldering cigarette in the living room ignited the fire.
