WORLD IN BRIEF : LEBANON : U.S. Seeks to Stem Arms Flow to Aoun

The United States has thrown its weight behind efforts to limit or cut off the supply of arms to Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, the Lebanese Christian leader opposed to a peace accord aimed at ending his country’s civil war. A State Department official said Washington has added its voice to those of Arab governments urging Iraq, which has been supplying Aoun with weapons, to halt the shipments. Iraq is opposed to Syria’s key role in Lebanon. Aoun, holding out in Lebanon’s Christian enclave, has dismissed Lebanon’s new president, Rene Mouawad, as a Syrian puppet.
