Mayor Art Agnos, thrust into the national spotlight by the Oct. 17 Northern California earthquake and widely praised for his performance, next week embarks on a public relations trip for his city. San Francisco’s No. 1 industry is tourism, and at the moment, it is struggling because of the earthquake. Agnos planned to visit Chicago, New York and Washington to reassure tour operators and convention executives that San Francisco’s tourist attractions, hotels and shops are open and safe.
