THE SIDELINES : USC Places 2 All-Americans

OKLAHOMA CITY — USC placed two players on the 46th annual All-America team announced today by the Football Writers Assn.
Colorado and Notre Dame, who will meet in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s night, each placed three players on the team.
The Trojan picks were defensive lineman Tim Ryan and defensive back Mark Carrier.
Defensive end Alfred Williams, offensive lineman Joe Garten and punter Tom Rouen were chosen from top-ranked Colorado. Notre Dame was represented by defensive lineman Chris Zorich, defensive back Todd Lyght and split end Raghib Ismail, who was selected as a kick return specialist.
Duke also had two players on the team: wide receiver Clarkston Hines and offensive lineman Chris Port.
Ryan, Hines and Indiana tailback Anthony Thompson were the only three repeaters. Thompson was joined in the backfield by Emmitt Smith of Florida and Johnny Bailey of Texas A&I;, a Division II school.
The team’s quarterback is Andre Ware of Houston.
