Jim Barnes, 58, of Mason, Mich., was the first of eight lottery hunters to score a kill as California’s third limited hunt of Nelson desert bighorn sheep started in the eastern Mojave Desert. The eight hunters were selected by lottery from among more than 2,500 applicants. The hunt ends Dec. 17.
