Amdahl Stops Fujitsu Supercomputer Sales: Amdahl Corp. is withdrawing Fujitsu Ltd. supercomputers from the U.S. market because of poor sales, a Fujitsu spokesman said. Sunnyvale-based Amdahl, 46%-owned by Fujitsu, decided to halt U.S. sales of Fujitsu’s E-Series 400 and 200 supercomputers because it has sold only two in the past four years, he said. “The U.S. market is very closed,” said the spokesman, adding that Amdahl had sold no Fujitsu supercomputers to American public organizations. In a 1987 pact with the United States, Tokyo pledged not to discriminate against foreign makers in supercomputer procurement, but Washington says the Japanese market remains closed.
