WORLD IN BRIEF : JORDAN : Prime Minister Quits, Is Replaced

Prime Minister Sharif Zayed Shaker resigned and was replaced by Mudar Badran, who has held the office twice before. King Hussein ordered Badran to focus his efforts on Jordan’s dismal economy and to support the Palestine Liberation Organization. Shaker took office in April and formed a transitional government in preparation for elections last month. Islamic fundamentalists made substantial gains in the election, and Badran is known to be sympathetic to such groups.
