SCIENCE : Early Quakes Seen in Northwest

SAN FRANCISCO — Huge earthquakes may have rocked the Pacific Northwest more than 1,000 years ago, scientists said today.
At least two geologically uplifted areas in the central Puget Sound lowland may be evidence that major quakes occurred, Robert Bucknam, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist from Denver, told the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
“The geomorphic and stratigraphic evidence for abrupt uplifts at these two geographically separate sites suggests that the uplift resulted from an earthquake or earthquakes,” Bucknam said.
