Ciba-Geigy to Sell Units: Ciba-Geigy Ltd., based in Basel, Switzerland, said it plans to sell two of its electronic systems subsidiaries, including Spectra-Physics of San Jose, to focus on its core pharmaceuticals, chemicals and vision-care businesses. Spectra-Physics is the world’s leading manufacturer of lasers, laser systems and chromatography instruments used in chemistry and many other fields. Its sales last year totaled $296 million; its 1989 sales are expected to exceed $325 million, the company said. Also to be sold is Gretag, a Swiss maker of electronic and photo-finishing equipment, with 1988 sales of $129 million.
