Councilman Nick Presecan was elected by his council colleagues as mayor of Claremont Tuesday night, succeeding Alex Hughes, who died last week.
Presecan, 49, is senior vice president at Engineering-Science Inc. in Pasadena. Diann Ring was named mayor pro tem.
The council will meet at 7 tonight at City Hall to consider whether to leave the council seat vacated by Hughes’ death open until the April municipal election or appoint a successor.
The council also will discuss tonight a controversial proposal to levy a landscape and lighting assessment fee to raise $1.2 million a year, starting next July. The fee would cost homeowners about $90 a year.
