The Dec. 10 Opinion section generally painted a bleak picture for anyone concerned with the future of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. On the same page as Charles Krauthammer’s admonishment to hard-liners that “now is not the time to push Gorbachev on Baltic independence,” Patrick Buchanan confirmed Bush’s “generosity” at Malta in affirming the Helsinki Final Act regarding Soviet borders.
The powerful policy-making influence of the press too often fails to favor these small nations, where, ironically, the first independence movements began. Your editorial was, therefore, a very welcome reminder that their plight must not be forgotten.
