The American Military Action in Panama
With the invasion of Panama, the President has betrayed the new realization spreading in the world that we do have more effective tools than the military to settle our problems and differences.
His timing couldn’t be worse. Most world leaders are talking about “peace dividends”, and (Soviet President Mikhail) Gorbachev commits himself in both words and deeds to no military intervention in other countries. And at this moment, our president starts a war in Panama. What a reversal, and what a contrast to the exciting developments in Eastern Europe, where a groundswell from the people themselves, and not just military might, is producing profound change.
