HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Kennedy Capitalizes on 10-Point Surge to Win Birmingham Title

Kennedy High scored 10 unanswered points to open the second quarter en route to a 63-49 victory over Grant on Friday night in the championship game of the Birmingham tournament.
The Cougars (6-5), who trailed by one after one period, were led by guard Garret Anderson, who finished with a game-high 29 points. Anderson scored from all over the court and made three three-point baskets in the second quarter when Kennedy outscored Grant, 20-12, for a 35-28 halftime lead.
Lancer forward Rene de la Hoya led the Lancers (10-3) with 22 points. Teammate Keith Weinstein got in early foul trouble and was held to only eight points, six in the first half.
Despite scoring only three points in the first four minutes of the game, Grant led, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter.
Anderson’s 12 second-quarter points matched Grant’s total for the period. De la Hoya scored half of his team’s total in the period to keep the game close.
Trailing by eight as the final period opened, the Lancers cut the lead to six on a three-point shot by de la Hoya.
In other Birmingham tournaments:
Sherman Oaks CES 88, Monroe 80--Byron Devers scored a game-high 25 points and teammate Cleve McWright added 22 points as Sherman Oaks CES (6-8) won a seventh-place game.
Kenyon Wright scored a team-high 18 points for Monroe (1-8).
Reseda 61, Birmingham 54--Mike Basowski made five three-point shots and scored a game-high 20 points as Reseda (4-5) won the third-place game.
Anthony McComb led Birmingham (2-6) with 13 points and Kevin Horton added 10.
