NATION : Cockpit Smoke Cuts Flight Short

LINTHICUM, Md. — An American Airlines DC-10 with 257 people aboard made an emergency landing at Baltimore-Washington International Airport early today after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, the airline said.
At least nine people suffered minor injuries sliding down the emergency chute, authorities said.
Flight 240, with 247 passengers and 10 crew members, was traveling from the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport to La Guardia Airport in New York City when the pilot reported smoke, airline spokeswoman Susan R. Kelly said. Passengers also reported smoke in the cabin, but Kelly said she could not confirm that.
The plane landed at the Baltimore airport just after midnight.
The cause of the smoke was under investigation.
