Nation IN BRIEF : CONNECTICUT : Death of Homeless Man Closes Shelter

The death of a homeless man who suffered from Legionnaires’ disease has prompted Stamford, Conn., to permanently close a shelter and soup kitchen that he and another man suspected of carrying the illness had used, city officials said. Donald Parent, 60, who had been hospitalized since Christmas Day, died of respiratory failure apparently related to Legionnaires’ disease, hospital officials said. The city-owned building that housed a 25-bed shelter and a soup kitchen had been scheduled for demolition in March, when a new shelter was scheduled to open. In the interim, said Mayor Thom Serrani, the city will expand another shelter by 40 beds to fill the gap.
