U.S. Conscience

A.S. Novakow writes that there is no American in the last 50 years who could be called “the conscience of the United States” as Andrei Sakharov was to the Soviet Union (letter, Dec. 26).
Our country does have an equivalent figure, someone who wanted the blessings of democratic life available to all--rich and poor, black and white. Someone who was, like Sakharov, imprisoned for speaking his heart.
But to remember him you must remove the blinders and look beyond white America; for our conscience lies in black America: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
