BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dana Hills Surprises El Toro

Second-ranked El Toro High School lost its game of the season, falling 69-52 to visiting Dana Hills in a South Coast League game Wednesday.

El Toro’s Rob Johnson had 21 points, but got little help as Dana Hills outscored El Toro, 45-26, in the second half.

Brett Blauvelt led Dana Hills’ balanced attack with 13 points. Keith Barnett and Jason Hinchman had 10 apiece for the Dolphins (13-4 overall, 1-1 in the league). El Toro is 13-3, 1-1.

In another South Coast League game:

Irvine 64, San Clemente 52--Trailing by eight points going into the final quarter, forward John Molle led a fourth-quarter rally that gave visiting Irvine (9-9, 1-1) the victory. Irvine trailed, 45-40, with six minutes remaining and then outscored San Clemente (6-10, 0-2) by 18 points. Molle, who was contained by a box-and-one defense for most of the night, scored 12 of his 18 points in the final quarter.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 59, Santa Ana 58--Guard Ignacio Reed made the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity after time expired to give Santa Ana Valley (4-8, 1-1) its first victory over Santa Ana (5-10, 0-2) in five years. Santa Ana’s Chauncy Woolridge missed his second straight game for personal reasons according to his coach, Nash Rivera.

Foothill 48, El Modena 45--Visiting Foothill (10-6, 2-0) had a 32-13 rebounding advantage with 6-foot-7 center Fred Amos getting 16 rebounds and 13 points. Forward Mark Wilkinson scored 14 points and had six rebounds.

In the Empire League:

Loara 91, Katella 56--Tes Whitlock had 29 points to lead Loara (12-2, 1-1). Joey Guadio had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Saxons, Charles Gipson had 15 points and Ellick Hsu had 14 points and 10 assists. Kevin Carlson had 19 points to lead Katella.

Los Alamitos 84, Cypress 72--Robert Conlisk had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Los Alamitos (12-5, 2-0). Jared Rice had 31 points for Cypress (7-9, 0-2).

Esperanza 61, El Dorado 55--Joe Foss scored 20 points and Walter Foccatto added 16 for Esperanza (9-7, 2-0). Jerome Facione had 15 points and Mike Bradach added 10 for El Dorado (10-6, 1-1).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 57, Sonora 55--Ray Lanier had 21 points to lead Buena Park to its first league victory in two seasons.

Fullerton 81, Troy 70 (OT)--Defending league champion Fullerton made eight free throws in overtime to win its league opener. Guard Rene Arias scored 28 points for Fullerton (4-10, 1-0)). Mike Abbott made a three-point shot in the final seconds of regulation for Troy (5-8, 0-1) to send the game into overtime.

Sunny Hills 63, La Habra 50--Dominic Carnesi had 27 points to lead Sunny Hills (3-10, 1-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 70, Garden Grove 63--Backup center Mike Mahei scored 15 points and starting center Randy Schulze scored 14 to pace host Pacifica. Bob Loija scored 21 points for Garden Grove (5-8, 3-1).

Kennedy 64, Santiago 41--Jim Barker scored 15 points and Jermaine Galloway added 12 for Kennedy (6-6, 3-1).

Rancho Alamitos 80, Los Amigos 48--Paul Preuss made three three-point shots in the second quarter as Rancho Alamitos (10-3, 4-0) scored 32 points and coasted to an easy win.

Bolsa Grande 70, La Quinta 56--Bolsa Grande made three three-point shots in the second quarter en route to a 38-26 halftime lead and never looked back.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 86, Anaheim 45--Keith Walker has 28 points and 10 rebounds in leading host Brea-Olinda (13-3, 1-0).

Western 78, Valencia 49--Robbie Shelton had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Western (10-4, 1-0). Richard Tibbie had 19 points for Valencia (6-10, 0-1).

Savanna 62, Magnolia 52--Keith Rodriquez scored 16 points and Ben Smith added 12 for Savanna (11-6, 1-0). Magnolia dropped to 5-8, 0-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 87, Orange 52--Randy Kriech scored 13 and Tim Manning 12 to lead Trabuco Hills (7-8, 1-0) at home. The Mustangs led, 17-9, after the first quarter and, 42-26, at the half.

Laguna Beach 68, Laguna Hills 43--Guards John Trevino and Josh Borella combined for 42 points to pace host Laguna Beach (12-3, 1-0). Trevino had 22 and Borella 20.

Woodbridge 74, Costa Mesa 42--Costa Mesa suited up only seven players and was missing its top player, Xavier Hanna, who sat out the game with strep throat. Kevin Leahy scored 20 points for Costa Mesa (2-10, 0-1).
