NAMES IN THE NEWS : Iacocca Urges Youths to Read

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee A. Iacocca told about 130 first-graders that if they learn to read well, they will have friends for life--books.
“The most important things you’ll own are your books,” Iacocca said Wednesday. “You treat them like they’re your treasures because they are.”
Iacocca spoke at the Danforth Magnet School during ceremonies to kick off Running Start, a new national reading program. Syracuse is one of 10 school districts around the country instituting the reading program.
Reading Is Fundamental Inc. developed the three-year program with a $2.1-million grant from the Chrysler Corporation Fund. About 2,400 first-graders will participate in it in Syracuse.
