Football Tournament Would Eliminate Fun
I cannot understand why sportswriters and fans want a season-ending football tournament. Forget any practical considerations such as lost class time or how teams would be seeded into any such tournament: Let’s look at the emotional and psychological devastation that would be caused.
What would fans and sportswriters have to argue about all winter and summer long? What would Mike Downey, Allan Malamud, et al have to be snide and sarcastic about? Why would anyone want to deprive Jim Murray of material for at least two columns? Half the between-season fun for fans is the we-wuz-robbed bull sessions. Only spoilsports would want a tournament.
