4.5 Quake Rattles Mammoth Area

BISHOP, Calif. — A moderate earthquake rippled through parts of California’s Mono and Inyo counties along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range Sunday night, but no damage or injuries were reported.
The 4.5-magnitude quake was centered about 34 miles north of here in an area that has frequent seismic activity, the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park reported.
The quake at 9:29 p.m. was felt by residents of Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and elsewhere in the sparsely populated area near the Nevada border.
The last big quake in the region was a 6.5 temblor in July, 1986.
