Bear Stearns Ordered to Pay Damages: A federal jury decided that Bear, Stearns & Co. should pay $215,284 to Edith Wulach, a former vice president, because the brokerage refused to promote her to partner because of her age and sex. The Manhattan jury found that Bear Stearns discriminated against Wulach because it failed to promote her to partner in 1984 and 1985 when she was in her mid-40s and made her employment situation so intolerable she had to resign.
