Tom Anthony, principal at Capistrano Valley High School, said he plans to suspend at least three students today for their involvement in a brawl at a boys’ basketball game against Mission Viejo Friday night at Mission Viejo.
Anthony said he is reviewing videotapes of the brawl, which began with 3 minutes 49 seconds left in the Cougars’ 77-63 victory.
The fight started when Mission Viejo’s Eric Cramer and Capistrano Valley’s Scott McCorkle began shoving each other while battling for a loose ball under the Mission Viejo basket.
Parents and students turned in names of three Capistrano Valley students who ran on the court to join the fray, Anthony said.
Anthony said he had no plans to suspend any Capistrano Valley players. Cramer and Brett McCorkle, Scott’s brother, were ejected from the game after the fight.
“The kids know it’s an automatic two- or three-day suspension (from school) if they set one foot on the court,” said Anthony, who ejected two students from the game Friday night.
“Everything happened so quickly, I didn’t know which way to go, so I went to the biggest pile.”
Mission Viejo Principal Bob Metz said he will review a videotape of the game today. He estimated that 900 fans attended the game and the gym was filled to capacity.
Anthony said he’s watching a video taped by one of the Capistrano Valley parents to identify students who joined the fight.
