Zaruhi Emassian Vartian, 83, a lyric soprano heard regularly in concert in Los Angeles over the last 50 years, frequently with the Los Angeles Philharmonic when it was under the baton of Otto Klemperer. Fluent in French, Italian and Armenian, she sang in recitals across the country in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s and had continued singing in churches and at funerals until shortly before her death. She also performed in Armenian opera and the more traditional operas of Puccini, Gounod and Mozart. In Los Angeles on Tuesday.
