Sheriff’s arson investigators said a fire that destroyed a classroom at Lakeland Elementary School in Norwalk on Monday was started by an arsonist.
Sgt. Ron Moya, arson investigator, said the fire was definitely set, but would not reveal any other details of the investigation. Moya said no one has been arrested.
The fire started at 7:06 p.m. in a one-story brick and stucco classroom at the northwest edge of the campus. The blaze caused $180,000 in damage, which included $150,000 to the structure and $30,000 to the contents. An adjoining classroom had smoke and water damage and its windows were broken by the heat.
Classes are being held in the library and science room for the 60 sixth-grade students displaced by the fire.
