PACIFIC 10 TOURNAMENT / OTHER GAMES : Arizona State Surprises Payton, Oregon State

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Arizona State Coach Bill Frieder was walking to the locker room with his daughter Laura after the Sun Devils stunned No. 22 Oregon State, 83-75, in the second round of the Pacific 10 basketball tournament Friday night.

ASU President Lattie F. Coor stopped them outside the locker room.

“You must be pretty proud of your daddy,” Coor said.

Said Laura: “You bet I am.”

Young Laura is not alone in her admiration for Frieder and his basketball team.

Lured from Michigan to rebuild ASU’s struggling program, Frieder pulled off his biggest victory at ASU, as the Sun Devils shocked the Pac-10 champions.

“These kids have not quit all year,” Frieder said. “I’m happy for them. I’ve had a lot of these, but these kids have not had a lot of victories like this one and I’m so happy for them. One victory doesn’t make a program, but I think we’ve established some credibility.”

Arizona State had lost to Oregon State by 23 and 26 points earlier this season. The Sun Devils, who shot just 43.3% this season, shot 66.7%, including 70.4% in the second half.

Center Issac Austin made eight of 10 shots and scored a team-high 19 points. His brother, Alex Austin, scored 17 points, making six of 14 shots, including two three-pointers. Forward Mark Becker made five of six shots and had 10 points, and guard Brian Camper made five of six shots and scored 12 points.

The Sun Devils shot especially well down the stretch.

With the score tied, 68-68, after Oregon State guard Charles McKinney made a three-point shot, Arizona State scored seven consecutive points to take a 75-68 lead with 1:58 left.

Alex Austin hit a three-point shot and added a jump shot and Camper made a layin to spark the run.

But Oregon State guard Gary Payton, who had a game-high 31 points, brought the Beavers back.

Payton made two free throws to cut the lead to 75-70 and, after a Camper dunk, Payton made a three-point shot to cut it to 77-73.

But Alex Austin made a jump shot with 23 seconds left to put the Sun Devils back in command.

Arizona State (15-14) won’t have long to celebrate because the Sun Devils face UCLA in a semifinal game today at 1 p.m. PST.

“I talked to my father-in-law, who was watching UCLA (which defeated Oregon, 92-75), and he said, ‘Now that’s a basketball team. That’s what a basketball team is supposed to look like,’ ” Frieder said.

Oregon State (22-6), which has lost its last two games, will probably still make the NCAA tournament, but the loss may have cost the Beavers a chance to play in the West Region.

“I think they’ll ship us somewhere,” Coach Jim Anderson said. “I hope they ship us.”
