WORLD IN BRIEF : TAIWAN : Lee Elected to New Term as President

The National Assembly elected President Lee Teng-hui to a new six-year term in the wake of days of protests by Taiwan students and opposition politicians demanding political reforms and free elections. He was the only candidate. The Assembly vote, normally routine, has touched off angry calls for an end to 40 years of authoritarian rule by the Nationalist Party.
