World IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : U.S. Officer, Marcos Linked to Coup Bid
- Share via
A Philippine general said in sworn testimony that a U.S. Air Force officer and former First Lady Imelda Marcos were behind the December coup attempt that nearly toppled President Corazon Aquino. The U.S. Embassy denied any such involvement. Brig. Gen. Alejandro Galido alleged that a man identified himself as Air Force Col. Harold Magleo and said he worked for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, which was seeking “the overthrow of Aquino and the return of the Marcoses” from Hawaiian exile. Galido also said he received a call from Imelda Marcos on Sept. 5 and that she promised the mutineers $454,000 if they succeeded in restoring her husband, Ferdinand E. Marcos, to power. The former president died in exile Sept. 28.
