Patrik Boden, a University of Texas sophomore, set a world record by throwing the javelin 292 feet 4 inches at Austin, Tex.
The International Amateur Athletic Federation will wait 24 hours and require Boden to pass a drug test before the throw is certified as a record.
The new-model javelin, redesigned to travel a shorter distance, has been used since 1986.
