Van Nuys 3, Grant 2--Carlos Gonzalez tripled with two out in the seventh inning to spark a two-run Van Nuys rally in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys.
Gonzalez’ hit drove in a run to tie the score, 2-2, and he scored on an infield single by Carlos Gutierrez. Tony Gonzalez struck out three and held Grant to three hits.
Birmingham 8, North Hollywood 1--A dropped fly ball triggered a three-run second inning for visiting Birmingham in an East Valley League game.
Josh Brown scattered four hits, struck out five and walked none for Birmingham (5-5-1, 4-4). Braves Matt Mowry and Noah Kirschbaum each had two hits.
Poly 11, Monroe 5--Will Molina and Marlon McKinney each had two hits and combined for four RBIs to pace host Poly in a Valley Pac-8 game.
David Giatti (1-2-1), a senior right-hander, entered in relief of starter Rodrigo Dorame in the fourth inning for Poly (10-2, 8-0).
Christian Ascencio and Mark Montelongo each had two hits for Monroe (3-3, 3-3).
Marshall 6, Verdugo Hills 4--Jaime Chavez had two hits--including a home run--and three RBIs to lead visiting Marshall (4-3, 2-0) in a Northern Conference game.
Junior right-hander Jon Bishop (1-2) struck out 12 and allowed no earned runs, and teammate Pat Eubanks hit a three-run home run for Verdugo Hills (1-7, 1-2).
Providence 22, Yeshiva 2--Senior designated-hitter Greg Hurley was four for four with two RBIs and hit for the cycle to lead Providence (6-4-1, 3-2-1) in a Liberty League game at Yeshiva.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Harvard d. Chaminade, 15-2, 15-11, 15-6--Middle blocker Rick Osterloh had 15 kills to lead Harvard (5-1, 3-0) in a San Fernando Valley League match.
Reseda d. Grant 15-12, 15-13, 15-10--Scott Kent had a match-high 25 kills and Shad Dockery added 14 for host Reseda (3-5, 2-2) in a Valley Pac-8 conference match.
Mark Jomsky led Grant (5-3, 2-2) with 14 kills and 17 assists.
Chatsworth d. Kennedy, 15-4, 15-11, 15-9--Setter Greg Saltzburg had 23 assists and Mike Nash had 19 putaways as Chatsworth won its third consecutive Northwest Valley Conference match.
The Chancellors (7-2, 3-0) received strong defensive performances from Ryan Labovitch and Scott Yager.
Taft d. Cleveland 15-0, 15-6, 15-9--Cody Hein (10 kills and 14 assists), Adam Friedman (18 assists) led visiting Taft in a Northwest Valley Conference match.
In the first game, Aubry Miller had 11 consecutive service points and five aces for Taft (6-1, 3-1).
Yan Huang had 10 assists to lead Cleveland (0-4, 0-2).
Van Nuys d. Sherman Oaks C.E.S. 15-5, 15-13, 15-5--Brad Schultz (14 kills) and Sam Saythathongsack (seven kills) led host Van Nuys in a Valley Pac 8 match.
Birmingham d. North Hollywood 15,11, 15-10, 13-15, 15-12--James Gould (27 kills) Stanley Yu, (22 kills) and Hye Kwon (11 blocks) led Birmingham (6-2, 4-0) in a Valley Pac-8 match.
La Salle d. Notre Dame 14-16, 15-5, 15-9, 15-17, 15-13--Dan Palmquist (21 kills), Dindo Valencia (21 kills) and Duc Nguyen (65 assists) led La Salle in a San Fernando League match.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Reseda 93, Kennedy 30--John Van Duinwyk, Tim Schaeffer, Lee Vu each won three events to lead Reseda (6-0) in a West Valley League meet at Birmingham.
SOFTBALL
Notre Dame 4, Chaminade 3--Senior Becca Berline pitched a complete game and pounded two triples to pace the Knights in a San Fernando Valley League opener.
