Soviet Trade Deficit: The Soviet economy chalked up a trade deficit of $5.4 billion in 1989--the first in 14 years, according to a news report by the Communist Party weekly Ekonomika i Zhizn (Economics and Life). The deficit was led by an sharp falloff in energy exports and a jump in grain imports. Total imports for 1989 amounted to $117 billion, while exports totaled $112 billion. Oil exports were down 11.7%, while coal exports fell 4.8%.
