Bush on AIDS

We are at “war” against AIDS? President Bush’s statements would be laughable if so many lives had not been lost in this tragedy (Part A, March 30). The battle against AIDS began more than a decade ago. Why did Reagan/Bush let so many die unnecessarily in that time before this declaration of war?
And what are his weapons of war? His rhetoric sounds great, but the President’s empty words do nothing to stop transmission of the virus, or help someone who needs treatment but can’t afford it. It does nothing to stop discrimination against persons with the HIV infection or AIDS.
Words are not enough, Mr. President. Where’s the action?
