Jon Runyan, a student at Moorpark College, was elected student representative on the governing board of the Ventura County Community College District, district officials announced.
Runyan, 19, a resident of Agoura, will serve a one-year term beginning July 3 as student trustee working with the five regular members of the governing board. He will represent students from Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura community colleges with the authority to cast advisory votes on agenda items.
With a total of 1,184 votes cast, the turnout was the largest ever for a student trustee election, said district spokeswoman Cathy Garnica. Runyan received 487 votes, Ventura College student John Scherling received 456 votes and Lauren (Alex) Eaton of Moorpark College received 241 votes.
Student trustees are required to meet with student government representatives before and after each monthly board meeting. Under a recently revised district policy, Runyan will receive $400 a month, medical benefits and compensation for mileage between the campuses on college business.
