Ribbs May Be Good, but He’s Not First

Shav Glick writes wonderfully about Willy T. Ribbs, who will soon become the second black Indy-car driver.

The first was Los Angeles’ own John Robert Kay, who drove Indy-cars in numerous races here during the late 1920s and early 1930s. And he rode as a racing mechanic in the Indy 500 itself in 1932 with another driver, Al (Spider) Gordon, when two-man cars made the cutthroat competition doubly dangerous.
