MANILA — A U.S. warship picked up 39 Vietnamese “boat people” adrift in the South China Sea, a U.S. Navy spokesman said Wednesday.
The refugees included 15 children, the youngest a 1-year-old baby. The engine on their boat had failed.
They were picked up on Monday 850 miles southwest of Manila by the Alamo, a dock landing ship, and were being taken to Thailand. They were in good health, the spokesman said.
