Tapes Sought in Blackmail Trial

The government will subpoena tape recordings given to the New York Daily News by a gambler accused of trying to blackmail New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, a prosecutor said.
During a brief status conference in Tampa, Fla., the trial of Howie Spira, 30, of the Bronx in New York City was tentatively scheduled for July. U.S. District Judge William Castagna set no specific date.
An eight-count indictment charges Spira, who was not at the hearing, with using letters and telephone calls to extort and threaten Steinbrenner and outfielder Dave Winfield.
