NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Senate Approves Campaign Activity

The Senate voted 51 to 46 to allow IRS, CIA and FBI agents to participate in political campaigns. Such activity had been forbidden by the 51-year-old Hatch Act. Republicans had attempted to keep that status quo. A current Democratic bill removes most restrictions on political activities by the federal agents, and by civil service and postal workers. The GOP opposed the new bill because public employees and their unions tend to vote Democratic.
